About this race

The Louisiana Summer Night Ultra is a 10-hour overnight trail race in Lafayette, Louisiana, starting at 1205 East Alexander Street. It's a timed event rather than a fixed-distance ultra. Runners complete as many laps as possible of a 3.8-mile loop before the 10 hours conclude; only finished laps contribute to their final distance. The race's location is integral to the difficulty, taking place on wooded swamp trails during a Louisiana summer night. Runners contend with heat, humidity, exposed roots, and mosquitoes. Each participant must carry a light and their own hydration for every loop. The loop consists of single track, brief gravel road segments, and wooden boardwalks. Reflective tape marks the course after sunset. A single aid station is positioned for runners to pass it twice each lap, establishing a practical cadence: run, refuel, return to the dark course, and repeat. The event is cupless, requiring participants to bring or use a reusable cup. Participants receive a shirt, cup, and packet contents. Prizes are awarded to the top three women and top three men, with additional finisher awards for those reaching a set lap threshold. The course's low elevation and minimal gradient offer a distinct challenge for speed-oriented runners, particularly those accustomed to cooler or higher-altitude environments.
